KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

Dr. Tony Schmitz

Tony Schmitz received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Temple University in 1993, his MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1996, and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1999.

Schmitz completed a post-doctoral appointment at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and was then employed as a Mechanical Engineer from 1999-2002. During this time, he was also a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University.

Schmitz accepted an appointment in the University of Florida's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (UF MAE) in 2002 and joined the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2011.

His professional recognitions include:

    Dr. Matthew Franchetti

    Dr. Franchetti is Faculty of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and the Director of Undergraduate Studies of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Programs at The University of Toledo.

    He also is the Director of the Environmentally Conscious Design and Manufacturing Laboratory and Principal Investigator of the Business Waste Reduction Assistance Program, a joint effort with the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District.

    Dr.Franchetti is working as the Principal Investigator with the Health Science Campus at The University of Toledo to improve the business processes for renal implant patients by applying six-sigma concepts.

    He has worked as an industrial engineer and technical manager for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington DC, Pittsburgh, PA, and Columbus, OH and has conducted research at Daimler Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford before joining the MIME Department in the Fall of 2007.

    Dr. Franchetti is Certified Six-Sigma Black Belt from the American Society of Quality (ASQ) and has consulting and research experience with over 25 companies across the country

    Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam

    Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam is Ph.D., Materials Engineering, University Of Houston, 1992. M.S., Mechanical Engineering, University Of Houston, 1988. B.E. (Honors), Mechanical Engineering, Regional Engineering College, Trichy, India.

    He is an M.D. Anderson Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a Professor of Physics at the University of Houston. He is also the Director of the Applied Research Hub of the Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston (TCSUH). Prior to joining UH, he was with Super Power Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philips Electronics, for 14 years, up to the level of Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.

    Dr.Selvamanickam's research accomplishments include demonstration of a unique technology to fabricate single-crystalline-like films based on ion beam assisted deposition on flexible, polycrystalline substrates over length scales of more than a kilometer.

    Dr.Selvamanickam received the Presidential Early Career Achievement (PECASE) Award in 1996 and is the only-ever award recipient outside academia or research laboratories. He has published 194 papers in several major journals & including book chapters and edited a book. He authored the most cited paper in superconductivity and the third-most cited in Physics during March-April 1990; more than 600 citations to date. He has 53 issued patents and 13 pending U.S. patents and over 80 pending international patents.

    Research Interests

  • Thin film deposition of advanced materials by a number of techniques such as Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD), magnetron sputtering, electron beam evaporation, and Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD).
  • Single crystalline-like thin films on lattice mismatched, polycrystalline, and amorphous flexible substrates.
  • Epitaxial thin film growth of complex materials such as perovskites, bixbyites, rock salts, fluorites and pyrochlores and amorphous films for a variety of applications.
  • Complex thin films on flexible substrates by reel-to-reel deposition
  • Nanowire growth on practical substrates for various energy applications
  • Texture evolution and grain boundary control
  • Control of nano-scale interfacial and bulk defects in thin films and bulk materials to tailor properties to meet application needs.
  • Solidification processing of near-single crystalline bulk advanced materials..

    Dr. M. S. Shunmugam

    Dr. M. S. Shunmugam is a professor in the Manufacturing Section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras.

    He holds a Ph. D in Metrology from the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, an M. Sc (Engg.) in Production Engineering and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from P.S.G. College of Technology, Coimbatore and College of Engineering, Guindy, respectively.

    His research interests include Manufacturing, Metrology and Robotics.

    Dr. N. Ramesh Babu

    Dr. N. Ramesh Babu is a professor in the Manufacturing Section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras.

    He obtained his Ph. D in Manufacturing Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, an M. E in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from J.N.T.U. College of Engineering, Anantpur.

    His research interests include Computer assisted manufacturing, Simulation of Manufacturing systems and Rapid Prototyping.

    Dr. G. L. Samuel

    Dr. G. L. Samuel is an Associate Professor in the Manufacturing Engineering Section of IIT Madras.

    He received his Post Doctoral Fellow in 2005 from Kyungpook National University, South Korea Specializing in Mechanical Engineering. He completed his PhD in 2001 from IIT Madras in Manufacturing Engineering.

    He did his M.Tech in 1992 from Univ. BDT College of Engineering Davangere, Karnataka Production Engineering & System Technology

    His research interests include Computer assisted manufacturing, Simulation of Manufacturing systems and Rapid Prototyping.

    Dr N. Jawahar

    Dr N. Jawahar is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai.

    He did his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from GCT, Coimbatore in 1982 and his M.E. In Production Engineering from Annamalai University, Annamalainagar in 1988.

    Dr N. Murugan

    Dr N. Murugan of the Mechanical Engineering Department, CIT obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Welding Tech.) in 1994 from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi.

    He obtained his Master's Degree in Production Engineering in 1983 from Madras University (PSG College of Tech.), Bachelor's Degree (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering in 1981 from Madras University

    Professor Murugan holds 28 years of experience in teaching which includes, research, consultancy and administrative experience working at different levels within CIT. He is specialized in welding engineering and technology. He offers Advanced Welding Technology, Welding Metallurgy and Finite element analysis for thermal and manufacturing engineering

    His area of interest are: Modeling welding processes, Surfacing, Welding process optimzation, FEA of weldments, FSW of Aluminium matrix composites, and nano technology of thin films. He served as Visiting Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Texas Tech University for a period of five months.

    Dr. Ayon Chakraborty is an Assistant Professor in Education Management in Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirapalli.

    He obtained his Ph.D from National University of Singapore, M.E. from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and B.E. from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur
